Wesleyan College

Founded in 1836 as the first college in the world for women, Wesleyan College offers an education that leads to lifelong intellectual, personal, and professional growth. Our academic community attracts those with a passion for learning and making a difference.

In 2004, Wesleyan College was selected to receive a $1.825 million Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education under the Strengthening Institutions Program. The grant became effective on Oct. 1, with Wesleyan receiving $365,000 each year for five years.

"We are thrilled that the U.S. Department of Education recognizes Wesleyan's longstanding commitment to excellence and supports our plans for making the academic program even more effective for today's women," said Wesleyan President Ruth A. Knox. This grant includes funding for faculty development in instructional technology, implementation of a Computer Information Systems (CIS) major, and enhancement of the teacher education program.

Faculty will be able to improve the teaching/learning process through expanded use of web-enhanced instruction, and several additional classrooms and laboratories at Wesleyan are being equipped with state-of-the art technology. The CIS major will provide students with a well-rounded background in computer information systems and prepare them for a variety of scientific, corporate, and industrial settings. Funding for the teacher education program will enable both the education faculty and their students to become technologically skilled and to integrate modern instructional technology into daily lessons and activities.

According to Wesleyan Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Delmas S. Crisp, "This grant supports the rapid changes in technology that influence how students and faculty together can enhance the teaching and learning process. We are further pleased that we will be able to begin our CIS major this spring and improve our highly recognized education program with the addition of a new faculty member and new electronic classroom."
